Last month we met Aster, a single mother with a 10-year old daughter named Eyerus. Eyerus is physically challenged in that her arms and legs don’t work. When she was born, her father left, labeling her as a “cursed child”. For a while, Aster and her daughter had to live on the streets until some people gave her the room they used to use as a kitchen to stay in. This room however is in dire condition. The roof leaks uncontrollably and the waterdrops fall onto the mattress right beneath it making it damp and a health hazard for both of them. To combat the cold in the winter and to make food, Aster uses coals and since it is a single room, they absorb all the smoke damaging their health even further. On top of all that, they have no privacy. There is another man who shares the room with them.

The people who let her stay in their kitchen also let her work for them by cleaning up the manure of the cattle they own and washing their clothes. With this, she earns 200-250 Birr monthly. This money is only barely enough to meet their daily needs and so Aster is under a lot of financial stress on top of taking care of Eyerus who relies on her mother for everything and needs her constant attention. Emmanuel Ability Center will help Eyerus by giving her some aiding material as well as taking her to CURE Hospital to see a doctor, getting some physiotherapy, and more.

We are glad to announce that Emmanuel has found a sponsor who is paying for Aster’s rent. She is now living in a better home with her daughter. However, since she stopped working for the people that gave her her previous home when they moved, they need financial help for their daily expenses. If you want to become a sponsor and help Aster and her daughter, please contact us.
