Short Term & Long Term Outcomes
Short-term outcome
The short-term outcome of the project is to increase the mobility of disabled people through provisions of physical mobility equipment so that they could support themselves in their daily lives. This will increase their independence and confidence. Simultaneously, the project wants to reduce the families’ and caregivers’ psychological stress and workload as well as free up their time as to be able to spend it in other productive and social ventures.
Long-term outcome
The long-term outcome is to establish a rehabilitation center. The goal of this center is to improve people with disabilities’ natural abilities and quality of life [RCC, 1998]. Rehabilitation will facilitate their productivity and independence; furthermore, it will aid their community integration where otherwise, they would have been functionally and socially limited [Maki & Rigger, 1997].
The convention of the right of the child was ratified by the Ethiopian government and infers that people with disabilities have the right to all aspects of rehabilitation, including social disability [Tirusew & etal, 1998]. According to Banja, rehabilitation is defined as, “holistic and integrated program of medial, psychological and vocational interventions that empower a person with disabilities to achieve a personally fulfilling, socially meaningful, and functionally effective interactions with the world” [Maki & Rigger, 1997]. Thus, the rehabilitation of children also takes different forms encompassing medical, psycho-educational, social and vocational therapy. Additionally, the rehabilitation approaches might take the form of institution-based therapy, outreach programs, or community-based care. The organization will undertake assessments to decide the type of rehabilitation as well as the approach that will ensure disabled people come into their full potential.
